4-2-3-1 formation next season with current squad?
Assuming Bilic goes with his favoured 4231 formation next season the side at the moment could look quite interesting.

Players not listed below will hopefully be moved on and I'm making assumptions on signing Song and Jenkinson.

Adrian
Cresswell
Jenkinson (fingers crossed)
Tomkins
Reid

Obiang
Kayoute

Noble
Payet
Downing

Carroll

Subs
Randolph
Collins
Poyet
Song (hopefully)
Amalfitano
Jarvis
Sakho
Valencia

A front three of Downing, Payet and a fit Carroll could be incredible.

Will Bilic go 4231 and if so what players do we still need apart from cover at CB full back?...

I don't see Song making an impact coming off the bench so I'd start him, along with Sakho, and Valencia for Carroll and Downing

I would have thought the plan is to play Payet centrally in his favoured position.

Mr Anon is trying to cheat by fielding 12 players.

If the team still has Noble, Downing and Carroll starting then it illustrates that further recruits are required. All 3 subs at best. However, that exacerbates the problem with lack of British players.

So our top scorer ( by a mile) doesn't get a start and sick note does? How in anyone's world , as we sit knowing what we know, would sick note start before sakho?

If Song signs, and plays to his capabilities, I'm struggling to find a starting spot for Kayoute and Noble in the first choice 11 if we go 4-2-3-1, assuming Obiang is the real deal.

Whatever way, it's good to have options, and it'll be interesting to see what Bilic does.

Carroll HAS to be nothing but an impact sub. It's a great option to have, and he is not built to start games.

Re: 4-2-3-1 formation next season with current squad?
I think it does present some problems with the current squad. In the 4231 that Bilic had favoured and which Payet has played most successfully in, Andy Carroll is the most natural fit at the 1 and I think you would see the best of him with Payet playing what is an almost free role behind him. That being said it is hard to plan anything long term with him.

The problem then becomes Sakho who is our most natural goal scorer but not sure he is the man to lead the line in that formation.

You could try him and Valencia on the wings with Carroll, they played quite wide as the forwards in the diamond and had success. But then that would leave us very open defensively.

The easiest with what we have is the diamond again with Carroll and Valencia rotating alongside Sakho. I saw both of those combinations play well together last year. Payet should hopefully be able to do the same thing he does in 4231 at the tip and we have a number of decent central midfielder.

Bilic will turn Carroll into a monster for us.

From from what I have seen of Payet working with Gignac, I think he can make Andy Carroll a monster .

But I think he needs to be managed carefully and along those lines if he was even our Europa league striker, most of those teams would have not idea handle him.

We're assuming he will play 4231, if he gets the tunisian cb he might feel he has the players to play 3 at the back...

With the talent we seem to be in danger of lining up I can't imagine how Noble and Downing get in.

Sakho and Valencia worked well together last season, and yet Carroll starts?

Everything I see going on at the moment indicates Slav is going to have "one of those very nice problems to have" on his hands and we might have some pretty good players sat on the bench. I'd say that's good news on two fronts.

a) We are going to need a strong squad for the Europa/PL campaigns.
b) Nolan will get left out of the 25.

"Sakho and Valencia worked well together last season, and yet Carroll starts?"

I think this has become a bit of a myth, Sakho and Valencia had 6 or 7 really good games together (and some awful ones), Andy Carroll with his injuries had, I would say, about the same. Not nearly as cut and dry as WHO would lead you to believe.

Keeping Andy Carroll fit is the biggest reason for not starting him, especially 4231 and with Payet in the side.
That is always going to be the problem.

That team is so far removed from the one that Biluc will play

Ducking midfield 3 with Downing and Noble in it !?!... Do fuck off

The manager will want pace, aggression and skill, sadly lAcking from those 2

Re: 4-2-3-1 formation next season with current squad?
What myth are you going on about?

I saw nearly all our games, and we were absolutely at our best early in the season with Sakho and Valencia up front. Once Carroll came back, we were good against Swansea, but quickly reverted to the stock direct shit of previous seasons, and by the time Carroll got injured, the team were in an awful slump with the first pair returned.

No myth there. I like Carroll as a player, but you are completely wrong, and the only person who sees it that way.

Are you seriously suggesting we only played ONE good game with Carroll in attack last season?

What I should have said was S and V worked well together when we had the right midfield, and Downing playing at the tip.

Of course, that all went to shit as soon as we increased the average weight per player across the whole team by adding Nolan to fill as much space up as possible on the pitch.

Long way around him.
